What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is one of the most widely used forms of medicine in the world today and is based on a sound scientific principle known as the “law of similars”. The law of similars means treating like with like. This means that a substance that can create symptoms in a healthy person can also cure someone who is suffering from similar symptoms. For example, a nettle sting causes a hot prickly skin rash and the homeopathic remedy “Urtica Urens”, made from nettle stems, is a commonly used remedy in the treatment of heat rash and similar allergic skin reactions.
Homeopathy as a form of medicine has stood the test of time and now we see homeopathy being integrated into some GP practices, as well as the existence of homeopathic hospitals such as the Royal London and the Glasgow Homeopathic Hospitals.
By the end of 2009, 142 Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs) of homeopathy had been published in peer-reviewed journals.
In terms of statistically significant results, 74 of these trials were able to draw firm conclusions:
- 63 were positive (patients given a homeopathic medicine improved significantly more than the comparison group given either an inactive placebo or established conventional treatment)
- 11 were negative (no significant difference was seen between the action of the homeopathic medicine and the comparison group)
